On October 13, 2020, Apple held a new product launch event to introduce the new flagship iPhones, the iPhone 12 series. 5G network, the iPhone’s fastest chip to date, a revamped design, an ultra-ceramic panel, and a LIDAR scanner that makes augmented reality more realistic. The Pro-class camera system also takes low-light photography to a new level with iPhone The 12 Pro Max has come on leaps and bounds.
The new design
The entire metal frame of the phone will revert back to the classic iPhone 4 shape, with the frame leaning to the side to make room for the screen, which is thinner and lighter. The thickness is reduced by 11%, the size by 15%, and the weight by 16%.
5G network
The full range supports 5G connectivity for faster download and upload speeds, less network access latency, better quality video streaming. In the U.S., 5G speeds can be as high as 4Gbps, even in highly populated areas. And with Smart Data Mode, it automatically switches to LTE when 5G speeds aren’t needed, such as when updates are being made in the background, to save power.
Screen upgrade
The screen is OLED with Super Retina XDR for higher brightness and brilliant colors. Instead of the standard cover glass, the iPhone 12 and 12 mini are protected by a “Ceramic Shield“ material that is four times more resistant to drops. The Ceramic Shield display cover is made by injecting nano-ceramic crystals into the glass to improve durability. The ceramic crystals were manipulated to optimize clarity while maintaining toughness, and the display was created in collaboration with Corning.
Chip Upgrade
For the first time, the new A14 bionic chip uses a 5-nanometer process with 40% more transistors than its predecessor, which not only improves performance, but also improves energy efficiency, making it faster and more power efficient. The number of cores in the neural network engine has doubled from 8 to 16, providing up to an 80 percent increase in speed when dealing with intensive machine learning tasks. The CPU’s dedicated machine learning accelerator also speeds up the performance of all apps by 70 percent. Combined with 5G network speeds, playing online games is even smoother.
Camera system enhancements
The iPhone 12 with dual cameras, the iPhone 12 Pro series with three cameras and a LIDAR scanner, and the Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom. The ultra wide-angle lens increases light intake by 27%, including an 87% increase in the pro Max’s ability to capture low-light video. Support for night mode and night portrait, day and night, for more detailed photos and sharper focus. Combined with the high-speed chip, iPhone 12 Pro can shoot 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 fps and edit it directly on the phone.
